Phantastic Photos

Last week the gang at Madison Ave. Collective gazed deeply into the lens of Dave Bassett’s Canon 1Ds and smiled, inquired, explored, held silly props, laughed, wiggled and wagged (or was that shimmied and shook? I forget). Needless to say, we now have some darned handsome photos.

Results of the portrait sessions can be seen here and here, as well as in the soon-to-be-released 2nd edition of our ever popular MACtivity book. Some production shots are below.

Big thanks to Dave for being willing to pull the trigger two or three hundred times for each of us. I also hear that someone captured audio from a few of the sessions, but let’s hope that tape never finds its way onto the internet.

Humor + Creative = Memorable Messages

By now you’ve seen the hilarious mashups of New Yorker cartoons with Kanye West tweets. If not, jump to Robert Mankoff‘s blog post to see samples of these and other cartoons that employ “the Incongruity Theory of Humor.”

Many of my favorite TV commercials use the Incongruity technique to create something that not only strikes your funny bone but makes you remember the advertised product/service. (Again, see Old Spice Man: The Man Your Man Could Smell Like.)

Remember “Think outside the box”? Today, you wouldn’t think of using that phrase with your clients, but you could offer to come up with something “crazy fresh.”

The next time you’re thinking up a new ad, design, or pitch, or even a new way of styling a photo shoot, think about how you might use the Incongruity Theory of Humor in your own work to create something memorable—something that “sticks.”

Cool iPhone app visits the MAC, takes pics

You can keep your carbon footprint calculator and the Fart Fone hilarity. The app that would be first in my download queue (if ever it showed up in the Android Market) adds a layer of fun to phone photography with some retro stylings. It’s called Hipstamatic. For the iPhone, it replicates all the analog goodness of cameras gone by with some very cool results.

Our resident photographer, Danielle Anthony, known for her huge talent behind more professional cameras, is getting lots of questions about these simple 10 second pics. She snapped a few for us at the Collective recently and posted them up on her blog. While you are there, keep an eye out for the man in the suit.

Now, Danielle knows how to frame a shot, so your results may vary. But still, after hundreds of shots, your cat pics could use a little something extra, am I right?
